Are You The Colour You Want To Be?

White. Yellow. Blue. Red. Black. No, they’re not the colours of my favourite footy team. They’re the colours you move through as you work towards your black belt in taekwondo. And, as you know, that’s the metaphor for life that I take my clients through, as we all work towards our own black belt – in excellence.

Hi again from Peter Thurin. Newsletter Number 2 for this year. Hope it finds you well, fit, productive, and focused on that “black belt”. Some great stories to share with you this time round, and some tips to move you forward.

In this issue:

Thanks for the feedback

I asked last time if anyone wanted to share some thoughts with me - with all of us - about ways they were moving forward on the path to excellence. Thanks for the wonderful comments. In New Zealand, Greg wrote to thank me particularly for our focus on the 1%-ers. Remember last time, the business exec whose 1%-er, the small step that was going to take him to even more business success, was his need to get healthier. He realised that taking a few small steps towards his own personal fitness was going to impact on his business, big time. In the same way, Greg writes to say that 1%-ers are something of a mantra in his business. It's simple stuff, isn't it, Greg? Making sure the phone's answered correctly. Shooting off a thank-you note. Sending someone a text on their birthday. Or to thank them for dinner the night before. Making sure your meetings start right on time. (And designating a finishing time for the meeting, and sticking to it!) Ringing someone back, when your answer message says you will!

Gotta thank you too for your fantastic support, Paul. 300 copies of my book off to Queensland. Wow. And I've been up there since and signed a few of them too! Always a great joy - you guys made me feel like a rock star (then I saw myself in the mirror....oh well.) ACCYO salutes you all. (That magnificent group of people who benefit from the sales of my book, is the Australian Council for Children and Youth Organisations. www.accyo.org.au ) And the sensational thing about all that powerful connecting with you wonderful people up there is that it only took me 6 years to make the phone call that brought us all back together again! There's a Peter Thurin 1%-er that's paid off for everybody. I hope you don't wait 6 years to take action!

Do you have any stories of the 1%-ers that have impacted on your personal or professional life? Share them with our online community! Email comments@blackbeltinexcellence.com.au, I would love to hear from you.

Another member of our online community wrote to say that listening to our audio CD "Be the Best You Can Be" has actually changed his life. I presume you mean for the better, Mattie! But thank you. It's a powerful tool to actually help you to make the changes that will change your life. All power to you and the choices you make.

That “bottom” line

I spent some conferencing time in Sydney a couple of weeks back. Now, I’m not going to name him, but for a couple of days I met, travelled and worked with the CEO of a prominent Australian company. He’s based in Melbourne, but spends a fair bit of time interstate, and runs a huge and very complex organization. As well, he sits on boards of several other companies, and is always the go-to man when the media want to focus on his company’s field of activities. In other words, he’s a very busy person indeed. I mention him because he seems to do it all so well. He’s at blackbelt level in terms of his business expertise, he’s still quite a young man, he’s got a beautiful wife and 2 young children. And he’s got the mix right in terms of his family life too. He specifically creates plenty of family time, turns his phone off and plays with his kids. Awesome. But guess what? I couldn’t help but notice – he’s neglecting his own health. For a man of his age and height, he’s just carrying way too much weight. In the thick of it all, he’s just marginally forgotten his own health and wellbeing.

Hey, it’s a pretty tough mix to get right – that’s why I spend so much time in our conferencing work at blackbelt in excellence, to make sure the mechanisms are in place to ensure a blackbelt performance in ALL areas of your life. No point having a blackbelt in business, if you’re going to end up spending most of your time in the intensive care ward! Talk to me about this, if you feel it’s worrying you. There’s stacks blackbelt in excellence can do to help, either you or your company. Shoot me an email, or pick up the phone.

Guess who came to dinner?

Those of you who know me well will know how passionate I am about management looking after their staff, creating a dynamic work environment, implementing strategies to bring the best out of their people. One of my newer corporate clients - just started doing some consulting work with them - has got a fantastic range of products (services, actually, in the financial sector), some really bright people at the helm, a network of affiliates working flat out getting their fabulous products out into the marketplace, but they've lost a huge % of their staff in the last 12 months. That's something we're working together to turn around, but at the moment the mix is just not right. Which leads me to ask you a question. If you're in a leadership position where you work, at the top, in the middle, on the floor, what do YOU do to excite your team? Want to share some stories with us?

Here's a classic example -

One of my clients - and this is a guy with a reputation as a really tough boss - actually invites his new people (with partner) around to his house for dinner! Great strategy!! He doesn't know it, but he's in perfect alignment with what employees actually want! Over 10,000 employees in America were surveyed recently, and asked to rank the factors most important in their job. Then their bosses were given the same survey and asked how they thought their employees would answer. Unanimously, the employers all said that the Number 1 requirement of their employees would be higher wages. Logical if you're a boss maybe, but guess what? Higher wages was actually Number 5 on the "10 Most Wanted" List for employees. Their Number 1 consideration? Appreciation of work. And Number 2? Feeling 'in' on things. Followed by Sympathetic help with personal problems. Then job security. Then, and only then, money. So if you're a boss, there's some food for thought for your next dinner party!

Can I quote you on that?

We’ve been blessed to have spent time recently conferencing up in Queensland, on both the Sunshine and the Gold Coasts (tough life, hey?) There have been so many memorable outcomes, for me as well as everyone who took part (and a special word of thanks to The Event Company, for pulling it all together. Now there’s a company that totally spoils you with customer service! Thanks guys, you were awesome.)

Sara obviously had a great time:

Peter and Andrew! Just wanted to let you guys know that we loved what you both had to say and it has made a big impact. I have decided that in my workplace, I am going to be the best manager my boss has ever had, and the best leader that I can possibly be! My first day back after Twin Waters was a whirlwind! My first client of the day wants to steal Peter’s book from me the minute I finish it, (I nearly read the whole thing in one sitting). Thanks again for your presentation, guys. It has inspired me.

Thanks for the brilliant feedback, Sara. Everyone at the event was outstanding. You are all, I’m sure, well on your way to being The Best You Can Be. Like Alesi and Kimmy:

I loved the buzz that your presentation created in the room. I could NEVER get tired of hearing you speak and do what you do! ... Alesi

Pete...awesome session. Every one was talking about the last session and how good it was and how much energy and passion you had within. I really needed a kick up the bum and you certainly gave me the passion to continue on my journey of life ... Kimmy

Until next time, have great weeks ahead. Remember, if I can help you in any way, get in touch. We cover topics such as money, health, family, life balance, work, career, being the best you can be. Listen in for some bite-size free chunks.

And if you haven’t got it yet, my book, as well as my 60 minute audio CD, both called “be the best you can be” are both available for purchase on the website. They’re both a fantastic way of reinforcing some of the most powerful principles of success I know.

And here’s the link if you want to book me for your next conference, workshop, seminar, success training. I’d be happy to talk to your company about awe-inspiring ways I can lead you personally and your company forward into the future with confidence, energy, commitment and a real sense of the value of life’s challenges.
