To be a part of something special.
Isn't it awesome when we know we're part of something special? When we know that the whole team is right there behind us, cheering us on, and that when we rise to the challenge we can be an inspiration to so many others?
I had the absolute privilege recently of seeing this in action. Let me tell you the story - it's still inspiring me and I know it will inspire you!
I was fortunate enough to be the keynote speaker at the recent Hog's Breath national conference (see the testimonial below). It calls itself a family company and from the moment I arrived on Hamilton Island, I was made to feel part of the family. Given how warmly I was welcomed, how immediately I felt part of the team, I probably shouldn't have been surprised about what happened next.
Towards the end of the blackbelt in excellence martial arts session, 200 people - from managers to franchisees - were in the conference centre trying to break a piece of board using the technique that my team had shown them. They were rising to the challenge - and the volume level was rising with them! As a group, they were just so excited and enthusiastic, a real encouraging family in action!
After a while - and this really shows what kind of family they are - the CEO, Ross, came up and whispered to me that one person in that 200-strong crowd hadn't broken her board. Talk about doing the one-percenters and making sure everyone was included! Ross had seen that Maureen had tried three times, but with no success.
I looked over and saw that Maureen looked daunted. She was hiding at the back of the room, but here was a CEO who really cared about every last member of his team. He just knew that Maureen deep in her heart wanted to break that board and be part of the success all around her. He didn't want anyone in his family to miss out on achieving their goal.
I told Maureen we weren't leaving for dinner until she had broken her board. And, incredibly courageously, she stepped up to the challenge. She was now totally focused on that piece of timber and, as I held it for her - and as 200 people chanted her name at the top of their voices - Maureen belted the centre of the board, followed through and smashed it to smithereens!
Now I've heard some rapturous responses from crowds, but that family lifted the roof! People had tears in their eyes and Maureen was ecstatic. It was just incredible to watch what one person could do with the full support of her team, her family, when she was engaged with her objectives, when she didn't give up, when she knew she was part of a team that was absolutely committed to her - when she knew, in short, that she was part of something special.
I sometimes feel in my speaking in Australia and around the world that I'm getting more than I'm giving. And that was one of those moments. Maureen's powerful effort, her team's effort to be relentless in its support and inclusion of her, inspired me and continues to do so today.
Is there a challenge in your life, right now, that you know you need to rise to? Or, just as important, is there someone on your team you need to cheer on? Both roles are so vital! By doing either of these, you can be part of something special, something that can touch more people than you ever dreamed. You can be inspired and be the reason for inspiration. And that's one of the greatest feelings you'll ever know.
Feedback
"There are many speakers out there on the circuit delivering a constant, static message, Peter Thurin is not one of them.
Peter believes in challenging the speaking world by carving his own track with fun, attitude, enthusiasm and sessions loaded with practical keepsakes.
It is so wonderful to be challenged to think differently and creatively and be able to immediately put into practice the true meaning of 'being the best you can be'.
We are still receiving raving feedback from all those who attended your training session. Many commented on how much they learnt from you and your unique way of delivering your unique message. It has certainly helped us all to re-evaluate our practices and approaches in helping people to successfully deliver our Hog'spitality.
You have laid the foundation cornerstone for our Franchisees to build upon both in their business and personal lives. Our National Conference was a mighty success thanks to you and your band of brothers.
The momentum is now a movement and great accomplishments are on the horizon. Many thanks."
